CBD and chronic-degenerative diseases

CBD and Chronic-Degenerative Diseases

Chronic-degenerative diseases are those that have no "cure" and that we simply need to control to improve our pet's quality of life. They are more common in older dogs and cats. Examples of these diseases include:

  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease
  • Hormonal diseases
  • Musculoskeletal diseases (osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia)
  • Diseases associated with the immune system (allergies, food intolerances)

These types of conditions usually require long-term use of medications, which can have its consequences. Most medications are metabolized by the liver or kidneys, so prolonged use can affect the function of these organs and eventually cause a secondary "disease" in our pet, affecting its quality and lifespan.

A clear example is the use of NSAIDs in musculoskeletal diseases, such as hip dysplasia. Long-term use of these drugs can trigger kidney disease. A similar case occurs with allergies, where steroids are commonly used to prevent pruritus (itching) in dogs, and the long-term consequence can also be kidney or hormonal disease, such as Cushing's syndrome, which can be triggered by prolonged use of steroids.

How can CBD help in these cases?

CBD has anti-inflammatory effects, so in the example above, we could use NSAIDs as a second option in case of pain, but manage the inflammation with CBD daily, in addition to dietary supplements that support cartilage regeneration.

In hormonal diseases, for example, there are often alterations in food intake. CBD can help regulate appetite, preventing the animal from eating more or less than it needs.

In the case of diseases related to the immune system, CBD has an important effect on the immune system, so it can help reduce the effects of an allergic reaction to an environmental component and, in addition, reduce general inflammation, controlling the nervous response that causes itching.

In conclusion, the idea of adding CBD to a long-term treatment is to be able to reduce the intake of common medications that can cause unwanted effects on vital organs. It is important to keep in mind that for this type of disease, a complete treatment is required that covers: diet, environment, supplementation, physical activity and, finally, the use of allopathic medicines.

ALWAYS remember to consult your veterinarian before adding or removing any medication from your pet's treatment.
